Canon PIXMA TR8620a Picture

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is your typical all-in-one printer designed for home offices. It has a large touchscreen display with short how-to videos, a five-cartridge system (with a dedicated photo black cartridge), and automatic double-sided printing. It's nearly identical to the Canon PIXMA TR8620 in appearance, features, and performance. The only advertised difference between the two is that the TR8620a isn't stated to support Bluetooth printing, though we couldn't get our TR8620 to work with Bluetooth anyways, even though it was said to support the feature.

Our Verdict

N/A Family

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is great for family use. It prints excellent-looking photos with lots of detail and vibrant colors; while some colors are a bit off, they don't look bad enough to ruin your pictures. Otherwise, it has everything else you'd need for varied home use: a flatbed scanner, an automatic document feeder, and double-sided printing. While it doesn't have an especially high page yield, the price of the cartridges is relatively cheap, which keeps the running costs low.

Pros
  • Excellent photo printing quality.
  • Decent color accuracy.
  • Has ADF and flatbed scanner.
Cons
  • Page yield isn't very high.
N/A Small/Home Office

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is mediocre for small or home offices. It doesn't print as many pages as other office printers do, so you might pay a lot in ink if you need to print large amounts often. Luckily, the price of the cartridges is relatively cheap, which keeps the cost-per-print low. There are also high-yield cartridges available that will last you longer.

Pros
  • Has ADF and flatbed scanner.
  • Has high-yield cartridges available.
Cons
  • Printing is quite slow.
  • Page yield isn't very high.
N/A Student

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is good for students. There's a wide variety of connectivity options, and you can even print, scan, and copy via the companion app. While its page yield isn't especially high, there are high-yield cartridges available that'll last you longer. Unfortunately, it prints slowly, whether you're printing a one-paged assignment or a long essay, but this won't be a problem if you don't mind waiting a bit for your work.

Pros
  • Has ADF and flatbed scanner.
  • Has high-yield cartridges available.
  • Supports printing via Wi-Fi, AirPrint, and Mopria.
Cons
  • Printing is quite slow.
  • Page yield isn't very high.
N/A Black & White

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is okay for black and white printing. It prints slowly, whether you're printing a single sheet or a multi-page document. Also, it doesn't yield nearly as many pages as monochrome printers do. That said, there are high-yield cartridges available that'll last you longer. Thanks to its relatively cheap cartridge price, its cost-per-print for black documents is still pretty low, meaning you won't be spending too much on each replacement.

Pros
  • Has ADF and flatbed scanner.
  • Has high-yield cartridges available.
Cons
  • Printing is quite slow.
  • Page yield isn't very high.
N/A Photo

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is good for printing casual photos since it prints nice images with excellent detail. Most colors look accurate, and while blues look a bit off, the inaccuracy isn't enough to ruin your pictures. Otherwise, it prints a 4" x 6" photo in under a minute and prints on a variety of paper types, including heat-transfer sheets, glossy photo paper, and magnetic photo paper. The sheet rollers within the printer cause some markings on the photos, though.

Pros
  • Excellent photo printing quality.
  • Decent color accuracy.
  • Dedicated photo black cartridge.
Cons
  • Page yield isn't very high.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is available in black only, and it's nearly identical to the Canon PIXMA TR8620 that it replaced, except the TR8620a isn't advertised to support Bluetooth printing. You can see our unit's label here.

Compared To Other Printers

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is an all-in-one printer that's identical to its previous version, the Canon PIXMA TR8620, except the manufacturer doesn't advertise the new version to support Bluetooth printing. While it's designed for home office use, it has a dedicated photo black cartridge along with its regular black cartridge, making it a great choice for printing fun photos at home. It prints pictures with an excellent amount of detail. Its page yield isn't very high, but it's similar to other all-in-ones in its price range.

Canon PIXMA TR8620

The Canon PIXMA TR8620 and the Canon PIXMA TR8620a are nearly identical in performance and appearance, so you'll be happy if you buy either one. The only noticeable difference is that the TR8620a's specs no longer mention Bluetooth printing. While the Bluetooth on the TR8620 unit we tested didn't work, the manufacturer advertises that it has it.

Brother MFC-J4335DW

The Brother MFC-J4335DW and the Canon PIXMA TR8620a are both all-in-one family printers. The Brother produces higher-quality documents, prints faster, and yields significantly more prints, so it's a better choice if you need to print a lot of documents for work, school, or hobbies. For photo printing, the Brother produces more fine details, but the Canon produces a wider range of colors with better accuracy.

Epson WorkForce WF-2850

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is better than the Epson WorkForce WF-2850. You'll get a good 100-200 more pages out of the Canon, which helps you save money on ink costs, even though the Canon's color cartridges cost more. Photos look much nicer, too, which may be important to you.

Epson Expression Premium XP-7100

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a and the Epson Expression Premium XP-7100 are both all-in-one family printers. The Canon is a better choice if you want to print photos since details look much clearer, colors look more accurate, and you can print more photos with it, thanks to the higher color page yield. On the other hand, the Epson is a better choice for office use since it prints faster, and you can get more black ink pages out of it. Its ADF can scan double-sided sheets, which the Canon can't do.

Canon PIXMA TR8520

The Canon PIXMA TR8520 and the Canon PIXMA TR8620a look nearly identical since they have the same chassis. They also perform very similarly. The only major difference is that the TR8520 is discontinued, so it's a lot harder to find available.

Build Quality
Type All in One

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a feels well-built, though some areas, like the output tray and rear input tray, feel a bit flimsy. The display panel can tilt upwards, meaning you can adjust the angle to your needs; however, because of the printer's design, the panel needs to be lifted if you want to open the output tray extender or print. Otherwise, it has a good lid dampener that keeps the entire scanner up well and slowly closes down on its own, so you don't need to worry about the top of the printer slamming down while you're replacing the cartridges.

Like all inkjet printers, the Canon PIXMA TR8620a needs maintenance to keep it running smoothly. There are some built-in tasks to prevent and resolve printhead clogging issues and banding due to misalignment. There are also some tasks to help you when cleaning certain parts of the printer, like the rollers and the bottom plate. You can easily access paper jams and sheet rollers by removing the front paper tray, removing the back input tray, then removing the rear cover, or you can even remove the transport unit if the paper is stuck farther back.

The cartridges are also very easy to access, but you need to make sure the printer is turned on so that the cartridge carriage moves to the center of the printer. When the printer is off, the carriage gets hidden into the sides of the printer, so you can't access them. Speaking of the cartridges, you can get a good 200-300 pages out of them, though you'll likely be replacing the black cartridge often if you print frequently. Likewise, the paper trays only hold 100 regular pages, so you'll be replacing this every few days if you print a lot and often.

The Canon TR8620a has a large touchscreen display. You can tilt the panel up to help you see the screen better if you're standing, but overall it has really good viewing angles from all sides. The menu is responsive and easy to navigate, and there are even instructional videos to show you how to do certain tasks, like change ink cartridges or load paper. Luckily, it doesn't have the same issues the Canon PIXMA TR8620 has with double clicks and unresponsiveness.

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a's page yields aren't exceptional, but it's about what you'd expect of a printer in this price range. It has four dye-based color cartridges for photo and color printing and one pigment-based black cartridge for monochrome document printing. It gives low ink warnings when it estimates ink is running out, but you can still get a few full pages out of it after that.

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a has a flatbed scanner and an automatic document feeder (ADF), so you'll be set whether you're scanning a single page, a multi-page document, or a page from a book. The flatbed scanner lid's hinges can lift slightly to accommodate thicker items; thanks to this, you won't have to worry about seeing black bars on the sides of the page where the lid didn't cover your scanned item. While the flatbed scanner's maximum size is 8.5" x 11", the ADF can scan up to 8.5" x 14" sheets.

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a's cost-per-print is good. While the cartridges are relatively affordable, running costs can quickly add up if you print often since the page yields aren't very high. If you don't want to worry about buying new ink, you can sign up for Canon's Auto Replenishment Service, which automatically orders and sends you ink or toner when the printer detects you're running low.

Color Gamut

The Canon PIXMA TR8620a's color gamut is decent. You can see the zig-zag line throughout most colors, but it doesn't show up in the cyan and green sections. In the green-to-yellow section, the line shows up as a lowlight instead of a highlight, meaning the printer tries to substitute saturated hues for a darker tone it can print. It's good at printing dark colors. However, it struggles with light colors (especially blues and oranges). Transitions from one color to another look mostly smooth, but some areas have an obvious separation, like from dark blue to light blue and green to yellow.
