Canon PIXMA TR4720/TR4722 Picture

The Canon PIXMA TR4720/TR4722 is a budget all-in-one printer designed for home use. It uses a two-cartridge system and is compatible with Canon's PG-275 Black and CL-276 Tri-color ink cartridges. The scanner has an automatic feeder but doesn't support duplex scanning. It has USB and Wi-Fi connectivity, supports Apple AirPrint and Morpia Print Service, and is compatible with Canon's mobile app. This printer is part of Canon's PIXMA TR4700 series of all-in-ones. All variants are identical in feature and performance; the model number only changes depending on the region, retailer, and color of the printer.

Our Verdict

N/A Family

The Canon PIXMA TR4720 is decent as a family printer. It prints photos with excellent quality, vibrant and fairly accurate-looking colors, and very good black tones. There's also a flatbed scanner with hinges that raise the lid slightly and an automatic document feeder. Unfortunately, the cost-per-print is poor, and it can't print directly from external storage.

Pros
  • Wide color range.
  • Decent connectivity options.
  • Produces fine details in photos.
  • Produces sharp-looking documents.
Cons
  • Very low page yields and high cost per print.
  • Slow printing speeds.
  • Requires a lot of maintenance.
N/A Small/Home Office

The Canon PIXMA TR4720/Canon PIXMA TR4722 is marketed as a home office printer, but it performs poorly for this use. The page yields are bad, the printing speeds are disappointing, and it takes a while to warm up to print the first page. It has an automatic document feeder but can't duplex scan, and it can also be hard to reach paper jams.

Pros
  • Has automatic document feeder.
  • Decent connectivity options.
  • Produces sharp-looking documents.
Cons
  • Very low page yields and high cost per print.
  • Slow printing speeds.
  • Requires a lot of maintenance.
  • Automatic document feeder can't duplex scan.
N/A Student

The Canon PIXMA TR4720/Canon PIXMA TR4722 is inadequate for student use. The cost-per-print is bad, so paying for consumables adds up. It also takes a while to warm up and print the first page, so you'll need to wait a while for essays to print. Fortunately, it has a scanner and supports Wi-Fi Direct.

Pros
  • Decent connectivity options.
  • Feature-rich mobile app.
  • Produces sharp-looking documents.
Cons
  • Very low page yields and high cost per print.
  • Slow printing speeds.
  • Requires a lot of maintenance.
N/A Black & White

The Canon PIXMA TR4720/Canon PIXMA TR4722 is poor for black and white printing. It has awful page yields, a poor cost-per-print, and prints very slowly. Paper jams can be very hard to reach, and the dot matrix display is difficult to use. It has an automatic document feeder, but it can't duplex scan.

Pros
  • Has automatic document feeder.
  • Produces sharp-looking documents.
Cons
  • Very low page yields and high cost per print.
  • Slow printing speeds.
  • Requires a lot of maintenance.
  • Automatic document feeder can't duplex scan.
N/A Photo

The Canon PIXMA TR4720/Canon PIXMA TR4722 is a decent printer for photos. It produces excellent-quality pictures that have vibrant and fairly accurate-looking colors. The black tones are also good. There's a bit of grain in the photo, and a small part of the grayscale is slightly off. However, the cost-per-print for photos is unremarkable.

Pros
  • Wide color range.
  • Supports various photo paper sizes.
  • Produces fine details in photos.
Cons
  • Very low page yields and high cost per print.
  • Requires a lot of maintenance.
  • N/A Family

Compared To Other Printers

The Canon PIXMA TR4720/Canon PIXMA TR4722 is an all-in-one color inkjet printer that replaces the Canon PIXMA TR4520. Compared to similar inkjet printers, it has somewhat worse page yields and takes longer to begin printing after going unused for a while. However, it supports automatic duplex printing and produces significantly better-looking photos.

For more options, check out our recommendations for the best home printers, the best printers for college students, and the best printers under $100.

Canon PIXMA TS3520

The Canon PIXMA TR4720 is an overall better-performing printer than the Canon PIXMA TS3520. The TR4720 is better for monochrome printing as it has a slightly higher black page yield and a lower cost-per-print for black-only printing. Also, it has an automatic document feeder, built-in fax, and can automatically print double-sided. As for the photo printing quality, the TR4720 has a wider color gamut and produces better-looking photos. On the other hand, the TS3520 has a better color page yield and a much cheaper cost-per-print for color documents and photos.

Epson WorkForce WF-2950

The Canon PIXMA TR4720/TR4722 and Epson WorkForce WF-2950 are both budget inkjet printers intended for home offices, though the Epson is a much better fit for that kind of usage. The Epson uses cartridges with a substantially greater page yield, has a higher capacity ADF for its scanner, scans substantially faster, and offers superior scan quality. Conversely, the Canon prints slightly sharper-looking documents and is a marginally better fit for photo printing, as it reproduces most shades more faithfully than the Epson.

Canon PIXMA TR4520

The Canon PIXMA TR4720 is the updated version of the Canon PIXMA TR4520. The two printers perform very similarly. The TR4520 has a lower cost-per-print and a higher page yield for both black and color documents. On the other hand, the TR4720 has a slightly faster printing speed. Both printers have scanners with an automatic document feeder, but neither can perform duplex scanning.

Canon PIXMA TR8620

The Canon PIXMA TR8620 performs much better overall compared to the Canon PIXMA TR4720. The TR8620 has far superior page yields at a significantly cheaper cost-per-print,  and it prints faster. Also, its large color touchscreen display is significantly easier to navigate than the one on the TR4720, and the TR8620 has an Ethernet port and can print directly from SD cards.

Epson Expression Home XP-4200

The Epson Expression Home XP-4200 is better than the Canon PIXMA TR4720 for most uses. The Epson yields more prints and is cheaper to maintain. The Canon produces better color documents but prints slower than the Epson. For photo printing, although the Canon has a wider color range and is more color-accurate, it isn't as good as the Epson when it comes to small details.

Epson WorkForce WF-2930

The Epson WorkForce WF-2930 is slightly better for most uses than the Canon PIXMA TR4720/TR4722. The Epson feels sturdier, incurs fewer maintenance requirements, has an actual screen for navigating its user interface, uses cartridges with a higher page yield, and delivers sharper scan quality in less time. On the other hand, the Canon prints slightly sharper, more detailed documents.

HP OfficeJet 250

The HP OfficeJet 250 is better if you need to work on the go, whereas the Canon PIXMA TR4720 is better for casual photo printing. The HP yields many more pages at a much cheaper cost-per-print, and it has a battery so that you can still use it when you aren't near a power outlet. On the other hand, the Canon has a flatbed scanner that has a higher scan resolution for more detailed scans and built-in fax, and it supports automatic duplex printing and produces significantly better-looking photos.

Liene Amber M100

The Canon PIXMA TR4720 is an all-in-one inkjet printer, while the Liene Amber M100 is a thermal printer that uses dye-sublimation to print photos. If you need a traditional printer to print and scan documents that also prints nice photos, the Canon is a better choice. The Liene is better if you want a compact printer just to print 4" x 6" photos.

Epson WorkForce WF-2850

The Canon PIXMA TR4720 and the Epson WorkForce WF-2850 are both budget printers designed for a home office. The Canon is a better choice for photo printing since its images look much more detailed, and its colors are more accurate. On the other hand, the Epson is better for printing documents since it has a higher page yield and a cheaper cost-per-print, though its black cartridge cost is more expensive. Also, it prints and scans faster, so you don't have to wait as long for your documents to be ready.

Build Quality
Type All in One

The build quality is sub-par. It's entirely plastic, with some parts feeling flimsy, like the output tray and scanner lid hinges. The paper input tray can't hold many sheets and isn't removable, and if you want to store paper in the printer, you need to keep both the input and output trays open. If you need to replace the cartridge in the middle of a print job, the output tray could also get in the way and make replacement difficult. On the bright side, the cable is detachable for easy replacement in case it gets damaged, and the cartridges have an easy-clip system that makes them easy to replace.

The Canon PIXMA TR4720/Canon PIXMA TR4722 requires a fair amount of maintenance. Like most inkjet printers, the printheads can clog if left unused for an extended period. If the printer clogs or the print quality degrades, you can run several helpful maintenance tasks like printhead nozzle checks, cleaning, deep cleaning, and alignment. There are also sheet roller and bottom plate cleaning routines if you notice smears. Unfortunately, you have to change the cartridges often, as they run out very quickly. To do so, you first have to open both the input and output trays, then open the door at the front of the printer. However, you can't fully open this door if you have paper in the input tray.

In case of a paper jam, you can access the sheet rollers via the ink cartridge door by moving the cartridge holder out of the way. Alternatively, you could flip the printer onto its right side, then pinch two tabs to open the rear cover to access paper jams close to the rear. You can lift the button control panel to access any paper jams in the automatic document feeder.

The display is bad. It's a 2-line LCD that doesn't allow for tilt or swivel adjustments, so you must stand up and look down at the screen to see the displayed text properly. It's also hard to navigate through the printer's functions. If you're looking for a printer with an actual display screen, consider the Epson WorkForce WF-2930.

This printer has a bad cartridge system. It yields very few black and color prints, so you'll need to replace the cartridges often if you print a lot. Additionally, since there's only one color cartridge, you'll need to replace the entire thing even if you run out of only one color of ink.

You can use the high-resolution flatbed scanner for delicate items or slightly thicker media like spiral notebooks, while the automatic document feeder automatically digitizes multi-page documents like signed invoices or contracts. Canon advertises that the ADF takes only three seconds to scan each page, but even though the printer does scan each page quickly, you have to wait for the computer to finish processing each scanned document before the printer feeds the next sheet. It's slow whether you scan from your computer or the printer itself.

The default scan resolution is 300 DPI, which creates slightly blurry scans, as seen in the image sample above. However, you can scan at a higher resolution to get higher-quality scans with more fine details. Regardless, if you're looking for a comparably-priced alternative with better scan quality, the Epson WorkForce WF-2950 is worth a look.

When using the Canon IJ Scanning Utility software on a computer, the scan resolution maxes out at 600 DPI by default. To access the full 1200 DPI resolution, you need to need to click on "ScanGear", go to "Advanced Mode", then change "Output Resolution" to 1200 DPI. Doing so will create a large scanned file, requiring you to disable the thumbnail found in the top-left corner of the ScanGear window. The scanner can then capture finer details as a result.

The cost-per-print is high. Although the replacement cartridges aren't expensive, you don't get many pages out of them. Fortunately, there are XL-size replacement cartridges for a better cost-per-print. If you want a similar printer with a lower cost-per-print, check out the Epson Expression Home XP-4200.

This printer is compatible with the Canon Auto Replenishment Service and the PIXMA Print Plan. The PIXMA Print Plan is a standard subscription service that lets you print a set number of pages per month in exchange for a monthly subscription fee. More expensive tiers let you print more pages. In contrast, setting the printer up with the Auto Replenishment Service orders replacement cartridges that ship to you when the printer detects that it's running low on ink. Although you have to pay for the cartridges, shipping is free.

Color Gamut

The Canon TR4720/Canon TR4722 has a good color gamut. Colors fade well to white and black, and blacks don't have a very red tint that's apparent in most other printers in this price range. The transition between colors is smooth, with no banding, so gradients in photos will look natural. Unfortunately, the zig-zag line isn't visible in the light blues and greens, meaning the printer has trouble accurately reproducing those vibrant shades.

The color accuracy is adequate. It's fine for casual use, but it isn't suitable for professionals who require exact color reproduction. The printer has a hard time reproducing deep blues, dark grays, and blacks. If you want a printer with better color accuracy, check out the Canon PIXMA MG2522.
